Aftercare

After a long day of getting tattooed, it’s easy to forget aftercare. Here’s a simple cheat sheet to help you out.

Second Skin Aftercare Instructions

Your artist will apply a Second Skin bandage over your tattoo. Leave this bandage on for 5–7 days, unless instructed otherwise.

During this time, the bandage may fill with plasma, ink, or other fluids. This is completely normal and part of the healing process.

Please let your artist know before your appointment if you have any allergies to medical adhesives.

While Wearing the Bandage

  • Do not peel, poke, or stretch the bandage unnecessarily.

  • Keep the bandage clean and dry.

  • Avoid submerging the tattoo in water (no swimming, baths, or soaking).

  • Showering is fine, but avoid hot water spraying directly on the bandage and limit excessive sweating.

If the bandage begins to peel or comes off early, don’t panic—simply make sure the tattoo is kept clean. If you notice redness or irritation around the edges of the bandage, please contact your artist for guidance. If any built-up fluid leaks out of the bandage, remove the bandage completely and clean the tattoo thoroughly.

Removing the Bandage

After 5–7 days, carefully remove the bandage:

  • Start from a corner and slowly peel it back in the direction of hair growth.

  • Removing it under warm running water in the shower can make this easier.

Once removed:

  • Wash the tattoo with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap using your fingertips.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel.

  • Apply a small amount of fragrance-free moisturizer.
    Less is more—avoid over-moisturizing.

If you notice anything unusual during healing, it’s always a good idea to seek medical advice.

For Clients with Adhesive Allergies

If you’re allergic to medical adhesives, an alternative bandage (similar to a medical pad) will be applied. This bandage is not meant to be worn long-term.

  • Keep this bandage on overnight if possible.

  • Remove it the following morning and wash the area with warm water and a fragrance-free soap.

  • Continue to keep the tattoo clean and dry for the next week.

  • Moisturize as needed with a fragrance-free lotion (again, less is more).

Please Avoid During Healing

Regardless of the bandage used, avoid:

  • Swimming

  • Saunas

  • Tanning beds

  • Touching your tattoo with unwashed hands
